Now more than ever, staying fit and active is essential. Now it’s for health and not just to look good(which was never a motivator for me) and that’s why I am ‘all in’ with walking a hour a day. My personal motivation is greater than other women in their fifties, that being that my mom died of coronary heart disease at the young age of 61. As I approach that number, I am acutely aware and sensitive that I want to live much much longer than that. There are many things that are out of my control, but staying fit is something I can do to help my chances of lasting to a good ripe old age.
Since I have a family history of heart disease, I went to see a cardiologist when I turned 50. He did a battery of tests and determined that I had started to accumulate a tiny bit of plaque in my arteries. He took the decision of putting me on Lipitor(the lowest dose) very seriously. Doctors are now under the assumption that their patients will live to 100 years old so with that piece of information, he decided to be conservative and start me on lipitor so that we could nip the plaque build up now. He doesn’t want any more clogging in my veins. After all, they have to last me for another 5 decades!
So I am taking lipitor, watching what I eat(most of the time) and walking for an hour on the treadmill everyday( well, I aim for everyday at least). I’m not perfect and I fall off the exercise wagon every now and then, but I’m better and faster at getting back on track these days because I have grown to love it and need the exercise and know that this is just part of life at this point.
